What "hope" have they lost? What are the "desperate" about? "Control" of what?
Isn't "quality" for them slaughtering infidels? After all, that gives them hope
to go to heaven, lose any desperation they might imagine, and gain control of
a number of nubile virgins (I forgot the exact count).
