"Science functions on universals," can be translated to "Science functions 
on collectives." Individuals who don't fit the universals are considered   
"anomalies" and are largely ignored.

Given science's popularity as the one right way to establish truth, it's 
little wonder that collectivism (socialism) appeals to intellectuals. 
What's missing, as Pirsig points out, is the concept of DQ that only 
individuals respond to.

In a way, the experience of red is like the experience of DQ -- strictly 
individual.
