Platt to Andre: Yes, let's go for both and one thing more. Let's go for DQ by maintaining a thirst for the unexpected. "Dynamic Quality comes as a sort of surprise." (Lila, 9)
Andre: Hi Plat, couldn't agree wirth you more, especially in these sombre days when people are starting to hurt and we need quality ideas . Unfortunately I cannot detect them. Most governments appear to save and bail out what remains and let it grow again in the same old vein declaring things wrong with attitudes but not with 'world orientation'(SOM!!) Of course the (begging) questions I posed above concern the MoQ and the much vexed 4th level. As you know I am spitting through the archives with regards to this issue and have not finished yet. It is telling me that this issue has been explored ad infinitum and yet, there is no adequate answer except through Bodvar's SOL interpretation. I think his analysis is valid and that his statement that Pirsig has given us a great description of SOM is equally valid. But this was not Pirsig's mission. Okay, he wanted to show us what the result of an SOM (without quality) world looked like ( and the way it was experienced by many people) and he has succeeded in doing that. He posited Quality as Reality and Static Quality as 'the world within and without us' abstracted/ extracted from this reality/ being part of this reality. Upon this he built the MoQ. Bone of contention is: where is DQ?? within this metaphysical framework? Whenever we want to explain the MoQ to someone should we always have to stress that Quality is ASSUMED to be the foundation of all this (because it defies definition i.e having a clear intellectual referent)?? But perhaps this really is SOM's problem. It has created a toy shop and has invited and continues to invite people to this shop. You can get anything you want (at Alice's restaurant...excepting Alice...but people are not told this and by the time they find out it is too late). This is all there is. The menu and no food. The MoQ presents food from which you make your own menu (if you are statically so inclined). I'm beginning to ramble Platt. A large part ( I feel the most important part without which you cannot make sense of the MoQ) of Pirsig's M concerns the stage beyond the 4th level after the intellectual patterns have been 'killed'.
