[David] I do not believe it is accurate to refer to Gatto as an armchair pundit. He taught in the New York City public schools for thirty years and was nominated New York State Teacher of the Year.
[Arlo] Sorry for the confusion. I wasn't referring to Gatto with that remark, I was commenting on Platt's perennial condemnation of the public schools. As I stated, I think Gatto makes several good points. I have read ample studies that point to real community commitment as being a foundation needed, that many of our public schools lack. I strongly urge anyone who would condemn our schools to get involved, volunteer, mentor, help with literacy, teach a class. That is, I believe, the real salvation our schools need. And one reason I suggested Gatto would be wise to consider the successes of the Finnish schools.
