Krimel said to dmb: What gives your view a privileged claim to Truth or even truth?
dmb says: As I see it, our debates have never been about whether the MOQ is thee Truth or not and I've never suggested that my view is privileged. In fact, the idea that any view is privileged is antithetical to pragmatism, perspectivalism, radical empiricism, the perennial philosophy, the MOQ and everything else I've been defending. [Krimel] I agree we have a lot of misunderstandings but in this particular instance, you have consistently demeaned specifically the Christian revelation in favor of a "perennial philosophy" which is little more than Buddhism in sheep's clothing. [dmb] It's funny that you think I run away from your tough questions and vigorous challenges. It's quite the opposite. I just get frustrated by the failure to communicate. Like the health benefits of church-going thing. WTF? The issue going on there is the Pragmatic theory of truth. If you were familiar with that, that section of the Atlantic article would make a lot more sense to you. Basically, bad readers of James took him to be saying that truth is whatever works for you, whatever makes you feel better. This is nonsense. The pragmatic theory of truth says that a belief is true if it works IN GUIDING FUTURE EXPERIENCE. As one would expect from a radical empiricist, experience is the test of truth. Anyway, I'm headed out for Utah for some camping. Later. [Krimel] Well yeah, this does indicate that you don't understand my position. I frankly admit I don't understand yours. It is not so much that I don't understand what your position is about. There was a time when I shared much of what you appear to hold dear. It's just that I moved past that and truly don't get why you cling to it. After all, emotions are a form of pragmatic truth for just about every mammalian species but ours. I think we could both agree that more often than not, even we are not exceptions. But you are right, the MoQ ought to allow us to stand like visitors to the museum taking in the art work instead of bitching about each other's lack of taste. You seem to favors abstract fuzzy works that grab the gut and make you feel. I prefer more detailed surreal works that shock the senses with the juxtaposition of incongruities and make me think. But hey, enjoy Utah! That's what college breaks are for.
