Ian to Anthony: Can you point to the structure of the books themselves having koan-like qualities too ?
Andre: Hi Ian and Anthony. This is really an interesting discussion. I haven't quite got my bearings yet but would like to participate so forgive my intrusion. The climax towards which ZMM is taking us seems to me to be (among other things) Phaedrus' 'retrieval' of Quality. Interesting I find is that Pirsig uses the simple paradox folk-saying of 'The best way to learn something is to teach it'... i.e. Quality, and he then takes us on his own journey (if you like) and 'finds' it. And a large part of ZMM is about Phaedrus the teacher. I am not sure if this qualifies as a koan-type structure but the similarities, in terms of getting to the end result ( the folky, Western way as opposed to...well not really opposed to but having a similar effect on the receiver of the question/response) to the koan, Eastern way. Just a thought and back to hibernation.
