Platt is right, in a MOQ light Afghanistan is just one small sector of the
intellectual level's relentless struggle with the social level now clashing
with the Muslim world. The Westerners may try their best they can to
stay away from this struggle, at least its military aspect, but it operates
in countless ways - I guess Andre and John and the other do-gooders
don't condemn humanitarian aid, but this is part of that huge struggle.
And the social level fights back - its own "military" way in the form of
"terrorism" - and this (the Sep 11.attack) released "intellect's" own
military response. in the same way that Nazism (the social level's last
stand in Europe) released WW2.
Intellect's banner is "democracy" and I don't for a moment believe in
the standard "big oil" or Andre's (silly) "McDonald" regarding Iraq, it
was a genuine effort to introduce democracy in the Muslim world, but
that's in wain. It's now a strong movement in that country for a
Saddam-like restoration, and that's "good": A social value -steeped
culture fosters despotism in one or other form, their favorite form the
outright religious - sharia - type, like Iran, but any dictator is allowed if
only declaring Allah Akbar. While "western values" is their doom.
And that's no joke, if the Western democracy - which is is infinitely
more than voting but the civilian state with an independent judicial
system totally separated from religion(s) as a private, personal faith. If
this is introduced the social value based god-run reality is done for,
and this the Muslim "thinkers" know. After Sayyed Qutb had visited
Europe and USA in the fifties and had been shocked by their "sinful
ways" (in the fifties!!!!) he formed the Muslim Brotherhood that
assassinated President Sadat i Egypt and is the ideological base of Al
Qaeda ... and the rest is history.
IMO the Afghanistan "effort" is a sad waste, Denying training camps
for Al Qaeda is not a point, it's the security and surveillance of the
Western hemisphere that has prevented more terror attacks. If the US
and NATO pulled out the Taleban would surely take Kabul, but the
warlords will as surely take their old positions. and for God's sake let
them. If they want to lead their "late iron age" traditional lives why
bother? The "destabilization" is CAUSED by the foreign presence. The
domino doctrine did not hit South East Asia after Vietnam (rather the
Vietnamese invaded Cambodia to remove Pol Pot's communist
regime) and will surely not topple the "Farawayistan" region. But - alas
. Jacta Est Alea" as Caesar said. (the dice is thrown)
