Mark to Andre: I suppose we probably disagree on what a religious attitude is.
Andre: Not sure Mark, my parents were pretty good Catholics and I was baptised and raised within the Christian tradition. Mark: If you have a proof for Quality I would love to read it. Andre: Reading won't help you prove the existence of Quality, Mark. Apart from the examples Pirsig has shared with us, and the reductio absurdum applied to a world without Quality ( not really logical because the world would not exist without Quality) the existence of Quality is proven in direct experience or, as Northrop terms it 'immediate apprehension'. I think it is in LC that Pirsig expresses his surprise at the notion that people actually deny the existence of Quality. I agree. You have to create some strange loops to reach this conclusion. This is the result of pure SOM thinking of course. Mark: Even a convincing argument such as that posed by Anselm many years ago, and then formalized by Godel, on the existence of God. ?If you can do this then perhaps I will truly believe? that the intellectual level lies within Quality. Andre: Not sure what you are saying here Mark. Quality has the intellectual level...it is a static pattern of Quality. Mark: Now, as I have suggested to Bodvar, if you want release from SOM, then there are much easier ways to do that. ?Using logic is certainly not the best of them. Andre: Well, changing one's glasses or taking one's glasses off (to use Pirsig's metaphor) is not that easy. But I agree with you that logic ( a product of SOM created in such a way as to justify and perpetuate itself) is probably the worst of them.
