John I have mentioned something similar here before. Until Sir Isaac newton came along, the concept of calculus did not exist, we could build pyramids but the concept of acceleration were not there. Yes they did exist but it took calculus to allow us to put it down on paper. In your statement above you say they word 'facing'. Consider this. an average 40 year old makes the following statement: 'last year I made $40,000' By itself, that does not mean much, but if you chose to add to it any of the following statements, the value changes. 1. I am single and live with my parents. 2. For the previous 9 years i made over $200,0000 a year. 3. I have a wife and four kids and live in a major metropolitan area. My spouse does not work. 4. I am single and just retired. So what is value to one, on that instance on that curve, may not hold the same value to another.
