Mary to Andre and everymind:

I'm presupposing that when DQ is experienced it will be as SQ.

Andre:
There you put the finger on the spot of my 'uneasy feeling'. How can DQ be
experienced as SQ? May as well not have the DQ/sq division!

Here is what Mr. Pirsig says about the division between Dynamic Quality and
static quality in his simple, everyday example of the bying of the record:
'What the record did was weaken for a moment your existing static patterns in
such a way that the Dynamic Quality all around you shone through. It was free,
without static forms'.

And of course, further on, he quotes the essay of Walker Percy called 'The Delta
Factor' to show some other, more 'out' of the 'everyday' examples of this
division. (LILA, Chapter 9)

Mary:
Quality is Quality is Quality. DQ could be likened to SQ that hasn't been
experienced yet.

Andre:
And here you continue doing it again Mary. I get the feeling that you have an
idea of DQ as simply a 'force' that continues your static existence and
experiences?

Mary:
Right. All experience is SQ.

Andre:
I amended this Mary in a later post. All experience is DQ. We are apt to
'convert'/'filter' the Dynamic experience through our analogies upon
analogies...our own boxcars which are all our previously accumulated static
patterns of value which are culturally 'determined' as well. To be clear
though, the DQ experience is 'pure' every moment of our lives. We have this
opportunity to completely change from one moment to the next (and we do in some
ways without realizing it) but to maintain continuation, identity, a sense of
who and what we are (not only to our cultural selves but also towards the ones
close to us)we more than not continue our static patterns.

Mary:
Not having a choice about DQ is not a negative thing. I'm just saying you
have no control over it.

Andre:
Quality has you...not the other way around.

Mary:
If you're lucky enough to get 'struck' by DQ, then that's great, but you can't
conjure it up on demand or pick and choose what you're going to get.

Andre:
Refer to my comment above. Again I get the feeling that your experience of DQ
consists of 'it' reinforcing the static patterns you have already accumulated
for yourself.

Mary:
Enjoyed your post too.

Andre:
Thank you.
Take care Mary (or is it Bob?)
