This reminds me of my favorite Steven Wright skit. Not verbatim, but
it goes like...
When I was a kid I was watching TV and Smokey the Bear came on and
said "Only YOU can prevent forest fires", and I was like "Me?"... So
there I sat every night by my window with my pail of water....
Which is precisely the confusion Mary is having. She is Steven
confusing the convention "only you" with the literal "only YOU", and
sitting there with her pail of water and the belief that its up to
her alone to prevent forest fires....
