Ostensive definitions are notoriously ambiguous.
When you point & say "rose", am I to take it as a sample of 
a rose, a plant, a petal, red, a shape, a living thing,
something that needs water, something pretty, ad infinitum.

When I point to "this" or "that" I am indicating that thing in the context
of here and now. When I point and say "rose" I am not indicating this thing,
I am indicating a category of things of which "this" is a member.
