John,
Thanks for your explanation of how self-actualization may have influenced 
neglect of one's children and subsequent dependence on the state. Certainly, 
the number of wives finding it desirable to become "fulfilled" by working 
outside the home, or in order to "have it all," has resulted in reliance on 
others to raise children, with the results you describe.
