[Pirsig]
A subject-object metaphysics is in fact a metaphysics in which the first
division of Quality - the first slice of undivided experience is into subjects
and objects. ... What he had seen is that there is a metaphysical box that sits
above these two boxes, Quality itself. And once he'd seen this he also saw a
huge number of ways in which Quality can be divided. Subjects and objects are
just one of the ways. (LILA)

[Marsha]
Pirsig uses the term ‘subject-object metaphysics’ (SOM) for any metaphysics
(explicitly or implicitly) that perceives reality as either mind and/or matter
such as idealism, materialism, and dualism. " (MoQ Textbook)

[Arlo]
And again, this has nothing to do with the "subjects" and "objects" of grammar,
but a very particular metaphysical position where one ascribes the fundamental
division of "reality" as being S/O. Idealism, materialism and dualism are three
examples of metaphysics derived from such a fundamental division.

Pirsig's metaphysics are a metaphysics derived from a different fundamental
division, one that sees Static/Dynamic as the "fundamental division of the
world".
