I have had  an idea about this for some time, that I'd like to share:

John:  My idea is that often we take how another person uses a source rather
than the direct source itself as the basis of our critique.  For instance,
there is a vast multitude of Christ haters out there in the world, who
despise Jesus because of what Christianity has taught and become, but if you
look at Jesus's words directly you see that he didn't have so much to do
with what his religion has become.  It's thus that I interpret Phaedrus'
antagonism against Aristotle, seeing as how he (Phaedrus) was in a battle
with academic powers that had adopted Aristotlean "laughter" to demean the
philosophical position that Phaedrus was pushing.

And it'd be nice to go to the source on every single issue we are confronted
with in life, but life isn't long enough and so we do the best we can.

Is how I see it.
