Hi Ham and All,
In SOM Quality is an adjective, and resides in knowable being. People want
to talk about "knowable being" to distinguish thing, quality, quantity,
time, place, etc. In SOM Quality is an adjective.
Evolution posits that there are levels in existence. And rather than an
umbrella "essence" that includes everything, for clarity Pirsig suggested
that Quality is DQ/SQ undefined/defined. The value of that distinction is
that it raises Quality to a noun which has its own existence, not an
adjective which uses substance for existence.
The usefulness of that distinction is that Quality is moved from an
adjective to a noun, and evolution becomes possible and is a much clearer
base for metaphysics than an uncreated essence for which there is no
evidence except my statement of it. The logic in mathematics is only
observable at the intellectual level, and there is only an intellectual
level. What is beyone mathematics?
The reality of evolution? We are not a one-armed degenerate.
