dmb to Matt: Well, it's not that we can have excellence all by itself but yes, the main idea is that excellence is in some sense supposed to be ahead of the standards...That's where any artist works, even the amateur philosopher.
Andre: This reminds me of McCartney working in the studio in the documentary Let it Be. During the session, at a particular point, he says something like 'Not quite there yet', and I often wondered how he knew that they were not quite there yet...but he was after something...and difficult to teach. (Wish I had a copy of Let It Be as I cannot get it anywhere over here). dmb: I think Ray Davies is over-rated, by the way.
