dave,

My bullshit detector just went BEEP.

John replies a month later...

I disagree dave. I think if anything needs a solid metaphysical framework,
it's our "obvious platitudes." I mean, when *they* are on a shaky
foundation, we're in real trouble! I'd ask of any good Jamesian, What good
is concrete when its assembled incorrectly? -put into a faulty
construction, or too much water added or not cured correctly?

None is the answer. Concrete in itself, isn't everything. But we were
talking about platitudes, not concretitude, right? Well in my view, they
should be the same. Concrete is something that is just sort of assumed,
like steel. But what is steel? It's a construction. Everything is, in the
end. Steel, concrete and platitudes. We oughta be sure of their
construction.

John:

Wrong again, dave. I'd say the MoQ is rife with personal hygiene tips and
insights. For instance....

"I untie the packs and spread the sleeping bags out on the ground. Chris
goes off. I stretch out, and the tiredness fills my arms and legs. Silent,
beautiful forest -- .

In time Chris returns, and says he has diarrhea.

"Oh," I say, and get up. "Do you have to change underwear?"

"Yes." He looks sheepish.

"Well, they're in the pack by the front of the cycle. Change and get a bar
of soap from the saddlebag and we'll go down to the stream and wash the old
underwear out."

He's embarrassed by the whole thing and now is glad to take orders.

well, I realize that. But if you'd just go down to stream, wash out your
drawers and admit your embarrassment, I'm sure your orders will come.
