Interesting.  That sentiment is essentially Harold Bloom's definition 
of the artistic process: artists respond to the art work with another 
piece of art work.  (He was talking about poems, though, in The 
Anxiety of Influence.)

And by the by, per Bloom's understanding, in reference to Steve's 
suggestion of how to understand "meaning," all meaning is 
pragmatically understood as "misreading"--that is, pragmatically 
speaking, we shouldn't ever assume that someone is implying an 
ultimate reference point for their "meaning."  Only (Platonic) 
philosophers think that way, which is a rice-trap misreading of 
meaning (if you catch my drift).
