Hi Joe, This is an interesting question and I am not quite sure what you mean. So far as I can see, MoQ is a description of Quality in metaphysical terms. Personally I would not say it is self-evaluation. However, I think it can be considered an evaluation of existence. For me, MoQ describes a certain manner of looking at reality. As such, It provides a basis for this evaluation based on the Quality which Pirsig speaks of in his books. One way to look at it is that it tries to bring understanding to What Is in a manner which relies much on personal interaction. It tries to bring in a distinction between "the way we are told it is", and "the way we feel it is". This is why we cannot be told what is good and what is bad. We just know these things. Just my humble opinion on MoQ.
In my understanding, self-evaluation is a static projection. Such self-evaluation relies heavily on the social level, and can only be done in relative terms. That is, we objectify ourselves and compare ourselves to another. I could even speculate that MoQ draws a distinction between the biological level and both the social levels. If I were to expound on this, I could say that the social and intellectual levels rely heavily on static quality whereas the biological level (which I like to call the "personal level") does not. It is much easier to follow DQ (as it were) free from the constraints of the intellect and social pressures. As such, both the social and intellectual levels are static-based, whereas the biological and inorganic are dynamic-based. Of course both static and dynamic quality make up our existence. My point has always been that this duality is out of balance. The static is so dominating that we forget about the dynamic that makes up our existence. We become robots following what we are told is the way it is. Pirsig saw a whole different world when in Chicago. He is trying to tell us what he saw. ZAMM resonated with many people and they saw it as useful. Lila is useful too if one spends the time trying to figure out what Pirsig is saying from a personal point of view. The words and examples can be distracting, but so long as we keep in mind that Quality overrides truth, then we are OK. At least I am OK. Don't know if this answered your question. Cheers, Mark ps: the tricky words was just a rephrasing of what MRB had written about Zen.
