[Arlo previously] I don't know what your point is, either to say (1) I don't understand Pirsig's basic distinction, or (2) I disagree with Pirsig's basic distinction, since these words evidence both, but either way there is little I can add to these.
D: Another idea to consider is that I was not saying anything about you, pro or con. [Arlo] Um, well, looks like I should've used quotes. What I meant was: I don't know what your point is, either to say (1) "I don't understand Pirsig's basic distinction", or (2) "I disagree with Pirsig's basic distinction", since these words evidence both, but either way there is little I can add to these. So I never thought you were talking about me. But you were responding to me, and in a way that left me puzzled as to whether you were trying to express disagreement with Pirsig, or if you failed to understand Pirsig entirely. D: Have you ever considered the possibility that Pirsig's take is wrong in total? [Arlo] I've considered it, as I do with all things. But so far I've not seen anything that would make me accept it. I do disagree with Pirsig on a few points, for example excluding non-human species entirely from the social level. But there are levels of disagreement, and my points are minor and not related to the foundational premises of his metaphysics. You can't throw out the idea that "The Quality event is the cause of the subjects and objects... the parent, the source of all subjects and objects" (ZMM) and still believe to be discussing Pirsig's metaphysics. Without this, you are in another metaphysical view entirely.
