A lot of it goes back to that terrible mistranslation of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dukkha as "suffering.". That introduced a dry-hair, scratchy-shirt Puritanism we see in American Buddhism to this day.

The Noble Truth is more like, "Like gets out of joint / doesn't run smoothly."

The relation to ZMM and Lila - both of which have to do with smooth/unsmooth running - is obvious.
