Arlo said to Marsha:
... Look at this way, asking "is a quote philosophical?" is as absurd as asking
"is red paint artistic?" It's not about the 'quote' or the 'paint', but whether
they are artfully or artlessly deployed. The text you offered is neither
philosophic or non-philosophic, its the context- how it is used- that
determines this.
Marsha replied:
...what game are you playing now? ...Look, I already received one asshole
reply. Want to make it two?
Arlo said:
Exactly what part of my reply would you characterize as an "asshole reply"? Do
you disagree with what I said? If so, how?
dmb says:
The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal TaoThe name that can be named is
not the eternal nameThe nameless is the origin of Heaven and EarthThe named is
the mother of myriad thingsThus, constantly without desire, one observes its
essenceConstantly with desire, one observes its manifestationsThese two emerge
together but differ in nameThe unity is said to be the mysteryMystery of
mysteries, the door to all wonders
(Tao Te Ching, Chapter 1)
I presume everybody around here recognizes this quote, or one just like it,
from ZAMM. To put it in the terms of the MOQ in LILA, it's about the relation
between DQ and static quality (the nameless and the named). It's safe to say
that Pirsig puts it to work philosophically. How it's being used by Marsha,
however, is not at all clear. Since the quote opens a new thread and the
question (Is it philosophical?) is so inane and absurd, I think it's fair to
say that it has been artlessly deployed.
Rather than address Arlo's point, Marsha chose instead to accuse Arlo of
playing games and being an asshole. That's pretty damn artless too. This
response is not just unphilosophical and unintellectual, it's totally
inappropriate, evasive, insulting and childish. And there seems to be no point,
no stance, no ideas about anything.
Has Marsha ever had a reasonable or meaningful conversation with anyone about
anything in this forum?
