[Marsha] Is this quote intellectual? Is this quote philosophical? Is it both? Is it neither?
[Arlo] This is a contextual question, and more than slightly absurd, why not ask if the word "the" is philosophical?. If text (quoted or otherwise) is being used to advance intellect, to improve human reasoning, to "grow", to improve one's understanding of 'experience', then I'd say it is philosophical. However, if its being used to derail conversation, to obstruct inquiry, to deflect criticism and/or to bolster the ego of the speaker, then I'd say it is anything but philosophical. As such, far better to ask, "is this text, or are these words, being used philosophically here?". Are they being used, artfully, to improve the dialogue? Or are they being used artlessly, to derail and evade?
