[Platt]
I consider Arlo's motorcycle to emit foul noises and think the government out to
require at solution at the source (a muffler) not only under the principle you
cite, but under the principle of equality before the law. (Cars are required to
have mufflers.)

[Arlo]
For the record, Arlo's motorcycle's pipes do indeed contain baffles. As far as I
am aware, running without baffles is as illegal as running without a muffler.
But, both cars and bikes can be made, by virtue of performance parts, to
"rumble". I know plenty of car enthusiants, including both muscle-car
afficianados and those that mod Scions, that have cars that pack quite a punch
(and I am not talking about the billion-amp subwoofers some seem to enjoy).

The question is, of course, how "quiet" do we have to be? I sympathize with
those who are annoyed by baffleless hogs roaring by, as I sympathize with those
whose neighbors use chainsaws or spend every weekend BBQing, or even those who
want to enjoy a nice meal without being fumigated by the tobacco-addicts next
to them. Where do we draw these lines? What role does civility play? When do we
demand government make something "illegal", and when do we accept that our
"rights" to "quiet and odorlessness" only extend so far?
