Who was it said, that "in order to demonstrate the possible one sometimes has to do the impossible" ? I look at it this way. In order to demonstrate that ZMM was "it" Pirsig had to write Lila. To use the language of the other mail Lila is the whole, ZMM is the part which contains the whole. Depending where (part) you break into this loop / Quine, you get a different perspective, but it's the same (whole) loop you're in. Clearly to appreciate that, you have to appreciate both ZMM and Lila.
