[Platt] I'm all for exposure to good art. But most of what passes for art these days is junk.
[Arlo] Yes, well, some is and some isn't. But that's another thread. [Platt] Even Pirsig says it's immoral because modern intellect based on SOM has no provision for morals. [Arlo] Yes, he does. But my question is this. Why it is IMMORAL for intellect to dominate society, but MORAL for society to dominate biology? Now it gets sticky. If it is true, what you and Bo argue, that intellect _is_ SOM, then how can intellect EVER morally dominate society? And, if it can't, why put it above society in the moral hierarchy? In other words, it is not just modern intellect that is SOM, but ALL intellect by definition. Why would we have a moral hierarchy where biology should dominate inorganic, society should dominate biology, but intellect can be dismissed? Can you envision an intellectual level that is NOT SOM? [Platt] Sorry, I don't follow you. You seem to think intellect is necessary for responses to DQ? Is that what you're saying? [Arlo] No. What I am trying to ask is, if you argue AGAINST intellectually dominated society for the reason that it "shuts to door to DQ", then why not make the same argument against socially dominated biology? Why is "leaving the door open to DQ" so important on the social level but unimportant (and moreso, actively "bad") on the biological level? [Platt] Because, to repeat, modern intellect has no place for morals. [Arlo] So you disagree with Bo that intellect is ipso facto S/O? [Arlo previously] If it went right, I'd suspect we'd have more artists and philosophers, and that these pursuits would be the most meaningful and rewarded activities in our society. [Platt] Now that I agree with. Not more "American Idol" types who think they are artists but good artists, disciplined by hard work not to mention possessing talent and inspired to capture DQ, i.e., spirit. [Arlo] See, we are not so unalike. :-) ... keeping in mind it probably a fool's quest to think we can predict where a Dynamic Revolution will lead us, and DMB valid finger-wagging at my too closely associating "art" with "DQ", of course. moq_discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
