Ian quoted Ian:
I'm not knocking definitions, they have pragmatc value for sure, as well as
their deadly reifying dangers. "Definition is death" is a slogan, not my
thesis.

dmb says:
Oh, I see. You're not knocking definitions, you're just saying definition is
deadly dangerous death. Dude, seriously, this is the sort of drivel that
PROVES how desperately you need definitions. If you had any respect for them
you would not be contradicting yourself so conspicuously. If there is a
valid point buried down in there somewhere, you've not found the right words
for it. And what purpose is served by denigrating your own assertion by
saying its a slogan and not a thesis? That distinction depends on the
definitions of those words, or course, but that's not what bothers me. The
problem is that this distinction does not qualify the assertion itself but
rather your level of commitment to it. I don't see how that is relevant to
the substance of the matter. Are we not debating the validity of your slogan
rather than how strongly you feel about it or how vigorously you'd defend
it?

My slogan shall henceforth be, "Drivel is death". But don't confuse that
with my thesis. Also, my tag line will be "you deserve a break today", my
punchline will be, "because it was the chicken's day off" and my pick up
line will be, "what's a gal like you doing in a place like this besides
talking to a creep like me?".
