In the sense that "man" has no way of knowing what or how things responded to DQ before "man"? Or in the sense that nothing existed before "man", so the question is mute? Did _anything_ exist 100 million years ago? If so, was there anything at all that responded to DQ? Or was it all simply SQ until "man" came around?
