Hey, Khaled, haven't discussed with you for some
time. How are the wife and kids?
This comment by you prompted a reflection on a
current suspension at where I work. The Director, the
biggest umbrella in daily duties in charge of
supervisors, staff, in contact with administration,
etc... has been suspended for two months. Nothing is
hinted about directly as to why, but everybody on
campus has the same idea as to why. She is a
dictator. When many staff left recently, and staff
had to work a mandatory 8 hours of work for two months
due to lack of staff, plus, many open shifts where
still available and so even more overtime was shelled
out. The way this lady ran the place was a no
question just do what I say. There was hardly any
self-reflection. It came down to people are lazy or
dumb, that was her approach. So, all this tension on
campus, guidance was very lacking, safety a concern
(staff getting physical hurt by residences), and not
even a simple CARE, a pat on the back. It was a
'well, it's your job, and just get tougher'. She felt
she could run staff into the ground, and if they
couldn't hack it, well, they weren't tough enough.
That last sentence is what I actually heard her say at
a supervisors meeting one day. Her philosophy was
apply the pressure and make the staff get tougher and
tougher. Luckily people could quit and find a job
elsewhere. By the way, starting pay is around $9.00
an hour to put up with these residents where the
organization of the place doesn't provide decent order
to help new staff along. It takes 5-6 months as a
staff just to understand what the heck is going on.
Meanwhile residents are yelling and screaming at you,
and playing nicey nicey friend only makes things worse
until you show the residents you can hold your ground,
then being nice can happen but keep your wits about
you. It's all on the job training.
What's sad is I don't think suspending her and
doing an investigation (it's an internal investigation
advocated by the board) will change anything. What
does help is a 25 year veteran of the place works on
the unit in which I work. Experience is guiding us,
and he shows us things that get lost in how the place
operates and such so we as staff can bring those
'things' back into application, yet, what motivates
people to bring order and to even still know what to
do takes months and by then more people quit and it
starts all over again. I've only worked with one set
of staff in the almost two years I've worked at this
place that knew what they where doing and everything
was so consistent and the residents felt safe, the
stress level was the lowest I've enjoyed at the place.
That lasted for about 5-6 months and then all but two
quit, that is two stayed and 5 staff left on the unit
within a two month time span. That's pretty much how
many left on each unit during this time.
So, how doesn't something change internally? A
new philosophy, eh!
thanks.
I know this was a long spill on my part.
woods,
SA
