Krimel, (the screen name you chose)

Curious....

You digress; I choose my morals, including whether to cause mayhem. I think
that was the topic.

But what choices do I really have?

Hmmm....

I'll just stick to the last 5 minutes.

I chose to answer you ridiculous reply, which I chose to think about. I
chose to sit while answering. I chose to sit in a chair. I chose to listen
to The Clash while answering. I chose to tap my foot to the beat. I chose to
wear clothes while answering, I chose a green shirt, I chose beige overalls,
I chose white socks. I chose clogs. I chose to drink a diet Coke while
answering. I chose diet Coke from a fountain. I chose 44 ounces. I chose to
set my drink on the desk, I chose the right side of the desk. I chose to
stick with the default font. I chose to reply in English. I chose to use
punctuation. I chose glance at the pictures hung on the walls. I chose to
lean back in my chair. I chose to lean forward. I chose to turn up the
volume on the computer. I chose to close my eyes. I chose to open my eyes. I
chose to gently tug on the modem connection. I chose to set my cell phone on
the desk, I chose the left side. I chose to rub my face. I chose to tilt my
head to the right. I chose to sit up straight. I chose to ignore an offer
from McAfee.

The choices I really have imply what I could have done in the last 5
minutes, that list would be nearly infinite.

Man is choice. And that is man's purpose, if he is of intellectual quality.

Did I choose to be born? No, but my birth was a choice by others.

Did I choose the circumstance of my birth? No, but the circumstance was a
choice by others and my choices have changed my life's circumstances.

Did I choose the society I grew up in? No, but that was a choice by others
and my involvement in the society was my choice and I choose the society I'm
in now.

My native tongue? Do you mean my first learned language?

Did I chose to desire to come into the world addicted to oxygen? No, but
choose to continue my addiction instead of death.

Did I choose to desire to consume other living things? Yes. Again, I could
choose death.

Will I choose the moment of my death. Of course. My life dictates my death
and my life is choice.

You are constrained by your choices, or you could choose to believe your
choices make you free or you could choose to believe you have no choice -
any way, it's your choice.

Micah,

This idea of freedom to choose seems really, really important to you. Like
it must be absolute and inviolate. But what choices do you Micah really
have?
Did you choose to be born?
Did you choose the circumstance of your birth?
The society you grew up in?
Your native tongue?
Did you choose to come into the world addicted to oxygen?
Did you choose to desire to consume other living things?
Will you choose the moment of your death?

Our choices are constrained by lots of things. Biology is just one of them.

Krimel,

The reason people with social quality do not have to wake up and decide to
play nice is that our
ancestors made the choice for them.

"Nice" is a social quality.

People of intellectual quality don't do certain things for reasons of their
own, not the reasons of others. That is intellectual quality. Your self is
your choice, and it may not be an easy choice, but doing things by nature
(abdication of choice) is biological quality, doing things by convention
(the choice of others) is social quality, and doing things by your own
reasoned choice is intellectual quality because it involves the intellect in
the construction of the self.

Build your own box.
