Zazen, what I like to practice, is alertness, but not on anything in
particular. I hear a bird, well, when a bird is present to be heard.
Now, if I where to concentrate on the bird song specifically, well then
I've begun to meditate, I'm focused on something specific.

If I remember correctly, the beginners method to zazen is to focus on a
specific until it has
no meaning. when all has no mening and there is only the breath which
then has no meaning
the perfect mind is achieved. when experience comes and goes without
meaning there is the
quiet mind.
