The basal at my school--which I am free to use or not use--is not like the
basals in the 70's. There are complete stories from shorter books with most
of the authentic illustrations in the regular book or complete chapters from
longer books. I can pick and choose which stories I want to use and when I
want to use them--for many of them I have a paperback copy of the book for
that story. If the children like a story they can go to the library and
check out more books by that author--Grandfather's Journey by Allen Say is
one story in our third grade basal. We have that book in our library and we
read other books by that author when we finished that story. My children
have made a lot of connections with that story. I got an email from the
mother of a little girl from India who thanked me for reading that story
because she could make connections with the way Grandfather felt--loving and
missing a country when you were away from it.

Subject: [MOSAIC] persuasive Writing Minilesson Book Choices

Thank you all so much for the wonderful suggestions - I do have many of
these
books and have used them in this capacity before... I was just sitting here
today thinking I would start getting into persuasive writing right away and
I
could not for the life of me think of any of the great books I have used...
I
do not however have Tony Steads book Should there be zoos and I think Sue
had
said that it is hard to find... It sure is... I know it is availble for loan
at
most public libraries - but Amazon.com and chapters do not have it awailable
for
sure...
Thanks again... everyone ...

As an aside... Where I am from Canada I am not sure I follow the
conversation
with the Basal? Do you mean to say that in the United States you are still
mandated to read from a generic textbook like reader... for each grade
level?
like we did in the 70's? I do hope that they change this for you - that has
to
be very stiffling...I feel your pain...

Lori
