Maybe, in the end, we are asking the wrong question. Maybe it is more about the teacher and what the teacher does with intrinsic and extrinsic rewards to motivate, rather that intrinsic or extrinsic rewards as a whole. We discuss AR over and over again...it seems like it works for some and not others. Perhaps it is more about what ELSE is going on in the classroom...what kind of messages are being sent about reading in school and also at home... Over and over again, kids in my room learn to love reading when we start using the comprehension strategies. It is the thinking while reading that many learn to love... That's my point. Some kids aren't going to just sit to read a novel, some are.
