I would say not maybe, but definitely...and studies
have shown this.  It is ALL about the teacher.  And if
the teacher is aware that students must(and I believe
research shows that it is a must) move from being
motivated by external factors to being motivated
intrinsically, then that teacher will be the one
creating lifelong thinkers, readers, mathematicians,
etc.  This is but one reason that our job is so very
hard...we have to find those motivators for every
child and because there are many dimensions to both
intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. 

BTW, with all due respect, I strongly disagree that
this is off-topic for Mosaic.  We all know the
strategies teach the kids to think, but I believe they
actually start opening the door to some of the
intrinsic motivators in reading.   Doesn't
visualization put me right there in the book?  Don't
connections put me into the book?  Don't the 
questions we ask while reading motivate us to know
more?  The strategies make the text come alive for the
reader...pretty motivating...at least it has been for
this life-long reader.

P.S.  I am currently reading The Devil in the White
City (adult book)...fascinating!!
