It's a mix of both intrinsic and extrinsic. A kid does a good job on an
assignment because he feels good about it, but he also gets a reward with
the teacher's good grade or positive comment or pat on the back. I do my
job because I enjoy it, but every once in while it's nice to get an
"attaboy" or a thumbs up from the principal or from my peers. We ultimately
control what happens in our classrooms and in our schools. I've seen
teachers take a kid's head off while on duty because they aren't in dress
code arriving at the school.....is that any way to start that child's day?
I can ask the kid to hold their notebook while they tuck their shirt in and
get the same result, but I can also start their day off in a positive way.
It's remarkable, but the next day I'm on duty, that kid with the untucked
shirt will see me before they enter campus, and they will automatically tuck
their shirt in without any prompt. We set the standard...and the example.
