I hate say it Bill, but I see that you are from Florida, and I fear that this is exactly what we are doing. I have seen the same kind of apathy among 8th graders in my school. The teachers who are most successful with these kids are the ones who teach thematically, building background knowledge and creating interest. It takes a bit of drama to keep them engaged, but it can be done.
