Tim (and I hope he'll excuse me, for jumping in here) can probably tell you
more about this...but I heard him advise teachers to have the kids write new
lyrics for known tunes! I have gone on to do so and the kids LOVE it. You can
give the kids examples of what to do by using the book "Take Me Out of the
Bathtub." If you haven't found it yet...you are missing a treasure! The title
song is to the tune of Take Me out to the Ballgame....one of my favorites is
"Stinky, Stinky Diaper Change..." that goes to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle
Little Star. It is a real kid pleaser!

Tim I have a question about having my kids reread songs we have learned. I
would teach them a song and then they would each get a copy for their
poetry/song folder. During these repeated reading times as I would observe
them it seemed that most of them were not reading the text, but simply
singing. (They LOVED the singing!!) This happened in shared reading as
well as in partner reading. How can I guarantee that they are reading the
words each time? Especially when they "know" the words.
