So, why is it that I have NEVER heard of a teacher being let go? The only
reason someone is let go is because of misconduct with children. The rumor is
that it takes 2 years and $40,000 to get rid of a teacher and that at some
point, the district will "give up" and drop the case.

I had to way in here.....I am sure that there is plenty of truth to these
comments, but I work for a district that is currently being sued by three
teachers, an equal rights group whose name escapes me at the moment, and the
union
for wrongful termination after the three left for a maternity leave. All
three had extemporary observation prior to going on leave. After returning,
they were marked "not meeting professional standards". No explanations were
given even when sought. There are many other examples of under handed
practices
that the union has help teachers fend off.

Don't get me wrong, some of the things the union 'complains' about seem
misguided (i.e. teachers shouldn't volunteer to run the after school
intervention
program because you will not get your professional rate.) but- they have
been very helpful when it really mattered.

Just my 2 cents.
