Actually, this is not misguided advice. In California, if you work at a 
lesser rate than your normal salary, your salary numbers for retirement 
purposes can be adjusted proportionally, resulting in a smaller 
retirement benefit. Especially if you are working part time, check with 
your state teachers' retirement system about how they calculate your 
numbers.
