One was diagnosed with a learning disability and has since improved her ability to decode, however struggles with comprehending. The second child's mom decided I was the reason the child struggled (I had not noted the problem, according to her) but in a meeting with my administrator, myself and the parent I was able to pull my intervention folder on the child and document a history of concern beginning in October of my first year with the child, monthly letters, a record of each intervention (including Reading Recovery). I had suggested we screen for special education, given the history of intervention and that was what caused the reaction in the parent, I believe. Child got summer tutoring, still struggled as a third grade and parent decided again it was the teacher, so transferred to another school. Family members tell the child is still struggling and has never been screen for special education, so is NOT getting any intensive or extra help.
