I so appreciate this post. I've used textmapping with fiction and nonfiction as 
reading strategy instruction, but have not used it as a means to improve 
writing per se.  My class is in the middle of writing personal narratives and 
they're coming along pretty well; however I have about 5 kids that are 
reluctant to "stretch" their writing.  I can't wait to combine these strategies 
this coming week!  Thanks for the ideas...now I'm off to plan my approach.
