I like to take a tactile approach to vowel sounds and then pair it with the
auditory cues and connect it to writing.....

Lindamood bell's "Seeing Stars" does an excellent job of showing kids how to
discriminate short vowel sounds by using mirrors and noticing tongue and
teeth placement ... the difference between /pit/pet/ pat/pot/and /put is not
obvious in writing nor is it drastically different in sound ...but with tactile

cues there is an actual descending mouth movement....and finger spacing that
occurs with each "smile sound" (vowel sound) The process is complicated to
write out but is effortless when done as directed in her manual. I love
Lindamoodbell for the way her discourse goes as well.... she shows kids from
their
point of error and works back to the correct response...

I teach first grade and I use chunk patterns ....but I always incorporate
the sensory part of Lindamood bell so that they can see the vowel sound at work

within a phonics rule that supports the word sorts based on a particular
chunk pattern. for what are chunk patterns anyway..... rimes that are built on
vowel sounds that incorporate a certain phonics rule that is the expectancy
for that word sort.
