Ok, folks. While I know this is a list for comprehension strategies, phonics
is of interest to anyone teaching reading. I also know, from being on this
list for a long while before moderating it, that phonics tends to be a hot
button issue and one that raises passions. I know that I "get my dander up"
frequently when discussing it with people here in my own school system...so I
totally understand why many can get very upset over the phonics issue. While
the
discussion about vowel sounds has been polite so far, I have seen it, in the
past, become very heated.

I am NOT saying that we can't discuss phonics; We do, however, have a
professional learning community here and we need to be sure that as we post,
we
keep the tone professional. When someone disagrees, remember that they may
have
different schema! Different teaching situations...different teaching
styles...different education. Seek first to understand your colleague...then
work to
be understood yourself. If you disagree with someone, ask them to explain
their thinking before sharing your own. With that kind of respectful dialogue,
we can all learn. We also ensure that we don't lose members who feel that
their points of view are not respected.

You ALL are probably the best professional development I have ever had...so
keep up the great work...keep asking questions and sharing ideas. (Remember
that the primary purpose of this list is to discuss comprehension...lets hear
what you are doing in the classroom!) As Ellin tells us in her newest
book...conversation between learners is essential to maximize learning!
 You are the best!
