I would heartily agree with young readers but by second grade, I applaud the idea of working with as many 'real' books as possible. When working in a 1-2 loop, I made the switch to literature (vs. Leveled texts) as early as second semester 1st grade. However, please don't neglect nonfiction reading in this and leveled texts from companies like RedBrick, National Geographic and others are really quite strong.
