I can't offer you much except this: when working with our troubled teens in
a summer reading program the most often stolen book was Touching Spirit Bear
and in a close second were any of the series that includes A Child Called
It.  These kids have rough, rough lives and books that don't sugarcoat
reality seem to appeal to them.  I haven't worked with this population in a
while but I wonder if Crack (a story of addiction in poetry) would not also
appeal to them.
