I liked Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson which is about a girl who goes mute after being raped during a summer party and Saving Francesca by Melissa Marchetta which is about a girl who's mom is severly depressed. There are a few more on my TBR list so I can't say yet whether they would apply to what you are looking for.

These kids have rough, rough lives and books that don't sugarcoat reality seem to appeal to them. I haven't worked with this population in a while but I wonder if Crack (a story of addiction in poetry) would not also appeal to them.
