Here is a list of all the resources we have used: the number one books to
recommend for theory is Ellin Keene: *Mosaic of Thought and To
Understand. For good how to and lesson ideas: Debbie Miller's: *Reading
with Meaning and *Teaching with Intention. Tammy McGregor's:
*Comprehension Connections have been a big help getting lessons that get
the kids thinking and talking. Stephanie Harvey's: Strategies that
work goes along with Keene and Miller's teaching. For conferring help in
reader's workshop Jennifer Serravallo's: *Conferring with Readers really
has helped us improve our conferences.
If you were to ask me what all staff MUST read for PD...I put stars by
those listed up top.
Have a Blessed Day.

Hi everyone,
My district is looking towards reading workshop and I was wondering what
books you would suggest for staff professional development. It is a K-5
school that up till now has used a scripted basal program with a workbook.

If you're looking for something for the whole school, I'd rec. Daily Five.
Yes, it is geared more for primary, but everyone can get something out of
it. It is an easy read and easy to follow for those new to teaching
without
a basal.

Reading Essentials (Routman)
Mosaic of Thought (Keene)
Daily 5 (Boushey & ??)
Teaching w/ Intention (Miller)--I'm currently working on this one myself.

Our teachers have become so concentrated on the Daily Five that those
newest
to Balanced Literacy are neglecting guided reading. Just a thought.

I love Stead's work! And do not presume from my previous comment that I do
not believe in The Daily Five, only that I think it may be a step toward
refining implementation rather than initial implementation. As I moved
towards workshop at the primary level, I found On Solid Ground to be
extremely helpful to me.

This I agree with. The Daily 5 is not a place to START. It's a place to
refine.

I'd strongly recommend Kathy Collins work, too - Reading for Real and
Growing Readers. BUT MY #1 RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE DORN AND SOFFOS'
TEACHING FOR DEEP COMPREHENSION. It's a small little book worth its
weight
in gold!!

This is a book from Stenhouse. I first read it online (stenhouse.com).
It is excellent. We used
several other sources.
