People who know me have heard this story before. My daughter, who at almost
age 30 is one of the most voracious readers I know, did not learn what a
vowel was before she began to sing arias in college. When she switched from
a private school which taught using language experience, to a public school
in second grade, they put her in remedial classes because she didn't know
letters and sounds. I was flabbergasted because she could read! They based
their placement on a word recognition list that they told me she could not
read. I asked for a copy of the list and put each of the words in a
sentence. She could read them all. I agree with Elisa. Build on children's
strengths and teach them what they need.

Phonics is a necessary component of learning to read. You can't memorize
all of the words in the English language. You need skills to know how to
approach a words you don't know. I did a lot of subbing in the middle
schools during the whole language time. The kids who had no phonics stood out
and had no clue how to approach words they hadn't memorized.
