Yes phonics is important, but within a balanced approach.  You can't be only 
phonics based nor can you only use "whole language".  You have to look at 
each child as an individual and base your instruction on their needs.  Of 
course you can't memorize all the words in the English language, that's 
where meaning comes in to play.  Meaning is what reading is all about.
